Save – Save – Save — P.S Save Money to Make Money
For those extreme savers looking for some new ideas, I’ve put together 50 really awesome yet (some hardcore) tips. If extreme savings isn’t for you, take heart. You can still live a frugal lifestyle and save money without adopting all of these. By the way these were compiled in part thanks to other Personal Finance junkies with more writting/publishing experience than I. Hope you enjoy though.

Â
1. Drop your cable package. Try an antenna instead. (Only for the ture frugal junkie)
2. Drop your land line. (Land what? Though everyone used cell phones already
)
3. If you can pick up your neighbor’s unencrypted wireless signal, drop the internet. (I’ll try and get around to making a post on this here soon, a step by step taking advantage of your neighbors generosity post…)
4. Drop your newspaper/magazine subscription. (You should already be using that free Internet connection to read these online.)
5. Find a friend to give you a haircut, or decide to go on a haircut hiatus and grow your hair out. (This was so stupid I just had to add it
)
6. Use the checks you get for Christmas/birthdays etc for essentials, and don’t treat them as universally accepted gift certificates.
7. Use actual gift certificates to fund your gift buying for others or to buy essentials.
8. Buy store brand groceries and toiletries when available.
9. Avoid going to the movies; rent cheap DVDs instead, preferably at a $1 kiosk. Better yet, check them out of the library.
10. Carpool, ride a bike, walk, or use public transportation.
11. Shorten your transportation costs by moving closer to the job. (If possible without significantly increasing housing price.)
12. Bring your lunch to work. (Geesh I really need to try and do this, but dang its a pain trying to carry all this stuff through security only to wait 2 hours to use it.)
13. Cook. (There a millions of free recipe sites online.)
14. Learn to love leftovers.
15. When out to eat, drink water and skip dessert. Consider splitting an entrée . (In the Long, Long term this will save in health costs anywaz)
16. Pay off your credit card balances in full, and use a cash-back rewards credit card.
17. Watch for going-out-of-business sales at places such as grocery stores or drug stores. Stock up on canned goods and toiletries for the next year.
18. Bundle up in the wintertime, instead of turning up the heat. Vice versa for the summer!
19. Spend time out enjoying others’ electricity instead of your own. Public library, coffee shop, etc.
20. Turn the lights off when you leave a room. Switch to compact-fluorescent bulbs.
21. Unplug cellphone and computer chargers when not in use. Also unplug computers and TVs – anything that still draws electricity when ‘off’.
22. Turn your heat down at night and crawl under a down blanket.
23. Turn off your hot water heater during vacations, or everyday during work. Same goes with your central air/heat.
24. Take shorter showers.
25. Make your own laundry detergent and glass & surface cleaner.
26. Keep an eye out for free entertainment events and festivals in your city. Try the calendar of events at your visitor’s bureau website.
27. Use Priceline’s Name Your Own Price for airline tickets.
28. Dye your own hair instead of using a stylist, or don’t dye at all.
29. Avoid stores when possible (except the grocery store) and throw away all catalogs before you open them. Better yet, call the catalog and have them take you off their mailing list.
30. Don’t ever buy magazines off the newsstand. Subscribe if you must.
31. Find like-minded frugal friends. Get a frugal girlfriend/boyfriend or spouse.
32. Quit smoking. Cut back drinking?
33. Use the library instead of the bookstore.

42. Take advantage of your employer’s medical FSA.
43. Only wash full loads of clothes and full loads of dishes.

45. Use a space heater to heat the single room you are in, instead of the central heat for the whole house.
46. Pay your bills on time to avoid late fees.
47. If you find yourself about to indulge in an impulse purchase, give yourself a cooling off period. Leave the store and wait until the next day to purchase the item. It is unlikely you will return.
48. If you are renting an apartment, only rent a place with the number of bedrooms you truly need. Don’t pay extra rent just to house all your stuff.
49. Unload your books, DVDs, and CDs on half.com. Hold a garage sale; auction it on eBay.
50. Negotiate lower rates on services such as internet and phone by bringing up a competitor’s rate or threatening to cancel.
